Biodesign Institute - Bldg B
The Biodesign Institute building project is Arizona’s largest investment in bioscience infrastructure to date. The Biodesign Institute is taking a bold, integrated approach to research, and this initiative extends to the built environment as well. The Biodesign Institute’s Building B is the first building in Arizona to earn a Platinum rating through the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™. Platinum is the highest rating awarded through the LEED system.
Building B earned its LEED Platinum rating by reducing its urban heat island effect, reducing its water use by more than 40 percent, diverting 50 percent of waste generated by its construction from the landfill, using recycled and regionally available building materials, maximizing indoor environmental quality, implementing a green cleaning program, and contributing to the restoration of its local natural habitat. Building A and B also support a 150 kW solar photovoltaic roof system, which will generate 10 percent of its electricity, as part of the ASU Solarization Initiative.
The second of two completed buildings in the four-phase Biodesign Institute projects, Building B opened in 2006 and provides 175,000 square feet of research space.
Biodesign Building B earned a Platinum rating on the U.S. Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating system.
