Arizona State University is closely following updates and public health recommendations surrounding the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). At this time, all upcoming on-campus ASU visit experiences and Sun Devil Days are canceled and will be held virtually instead.
Carrie Matthews Hall houses the nationally known Northlight Gallery and offices of the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts photography faculty. Northlight Gallery presents photography exhibitions of contemporary and historical significance, and work by Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts School of Art photography students.
At its dedication as a men's dormitory in 1920, the building was named A. J. Matthews Hall in honor of the distinguished Tempe Normal School president, Dr. Arthur John Matthews. Ten years later, it was renamed to honor the president's wife (fitting since by then it was a women's dorm), allowing the new library building to bear Dr. Matthew's name as a tribute to his 30 years as president.
